Power Rangers Dino Charge - Let Sleeping Zords Lie - Episode Review

UPDATED 3/22/15 10:30 PM EST
Episode Summary:
The five Rangers are digging for more Energems. Shelby is not digging, just thinking and looking at her sketchbook of the other dinos. She says that the other gems have to be with the fossils of the other dinos: Pterdactyl, Ankylosaurus, Pachysaurus, Plesiosaurus and Titanosaurus, they shouldn't dig where they last found bones. She has an idea: they if they combine the areas where they last lived and the energy signature of the last energem locations. The boys notice their drinks are empty, that Shelby drank them. She gets upset and runs off. In space, Fury cowards towards Sledge about Energems. Poisandra says Energems should be easy to find if the Rangers did it. She asks Wrench for help, he says Sledge and Fury were angry last time he helped them.
Back at the base, Shelby tells Kendall she has an idea which she rebuffs. Shelby says she is being underestimated and has been a  good pink ranger, that no one will listen to her ideas. Kendall shocks her by asking what the idea is. Shelby tells her. Kendall is inspired and gets DNA samples and says they can only do one dinosaur at a time. Shelby says she'll get the Ankylosaurus which is bonded with the Aqua gem. They make the Ankylocharger and create a device called the e-Tracer, which they show off to the boys when they arrive. It goes to the satellite signature which the evil ship happens to hover by and intercepts the signal. They find a zord instead of a gem. The five go out and find a huge hole.
A new monster, Sting Rage comes out. The Rangers fights Vivicks. They scan him for an Energem and can't find one. The monster stings Koda and makes him attack the other Rangers. They pin him down and take off the stinger, bringing him to normal. Ankylozord brusts out of the ground and stomps on them and goes back down. In the base, someone must have bonded with an energem. Keeper says the Aqua Ranger must not know we exist. Koda thinks the monster stung it like it stung him. Shelby says she'll take off the sting, she blames herself because of the e-tracker. Kendall blames herself, saying she did not encrypt the tracer and she leaves.
Shelby follows. Kendall goes in her truck. Sledge berates Poisandra but then finds out they got a zord and threatens Sting Rage. Kendall arrives in the woods and finds Shelby stowed away. Kendall says she corrects her own mistakes. Shelby says they should work together. Sting Rage and Poisandra arrives. Shelby protects Kendall and falls/morphs into the hole. The Vivicks attack Kendalla nd she fights back with a shovel and runs away. Pink Ranger bumps into the Ankylozord. The Rangers meet up with Kendall.
Tyler worries for Shelby and runs to the cave but is intercepted by Sting Rage. The others fight Vivicks while Kendall returned to the base. Tyler is knocked down and then all the Rangers. The ground shakes and Shelby and Ankylozord pop out. She took off the stinger. She tells the others they work too hard. The five do a roll-call. The two factions battle. Shelby takes Sting Rage down with her foot and then with Dino Steel's Tricera Drill. Sledge is angry and calls the Magna Beam.
The Rangers call the three main zords. Shelby says Ankylozord can help, they form the Tri-Ankylo formation. The five enter the cockpit. They use the drill and then hammer punch. They finally finish the monster off with the Final Hammer Punch. Shelby welcomes the Ankylozord. Fury is angry at Poisandra and wants to know how she found the zord. Sledge calls Poisandra and she runs off. At the museum, the boys gather and Kendall fixed the e-tracer. They get drinks. Shelby arrives and they move the drinks away from her. They applaud her. Koda says his grandfather invented a machine too... it's called the wheel. Kendall brings a big pink present for Shelby from the museum. Shelby is happy about it. Koda tells her it is poop. Shelby drops it and smashes it. She wipes her hands on Koda.
Episode Review:
I have to say this episode is by far the best one. It finally deals with the Kendall/Shelby issue. Shelby wants to prove herself and Kendall doesn't think highly of her. This episode uses two female characters in smart ways and show their strength and how needed they are in the team. It is a rare female-dominated episode used smartly since RPM. Kendall reminds me of Dr. K but not completely, so they are slightly different, not the same character.

Also, Shelby calls the Gold Ranger's dinosaur "Pteradactyl" and the Dino Charge Morpher calls it "Pteranodon." Also Silver Ranger's dinosaur was called Titanosaurus and in the morpher it says "Brachiosaurus." Also she said "Pachysaurus" instead of "Pachycephalosaurus" for Graphite Ranger.

Pterodactyl is a common term Scientists try to avoid. Pteranodon is a more specific one. In Zyuranger, Abaranger and Kyoryuger, the term Pteranodon is used.

I want to see Robert Baldwin to appear in the show! They are so missing a chance to have a cool cross-over of actors!

I hope maybe Aqua is being held back for a surprise. The fact they skipped over the new Ranger leaves even more tension than there was before!!!

I really hope that the identity of who found the Aqua Energem remains a mystery until the end of the series. So many people are already latching on to the waitress that serves the group in the final scene of this episode as a likely candidate and proof that they went with a female Aqua - something that makes no sense to me when all the teaser/bumper graphics feature a *male* Aqua with yellow trim (which would be a totally American invention) in place of the Blue Ranger. The solution to this shouldn't be cut and dry the way everyone hopes it will be.

Also, kudos to the production team for a clever use of Sentai footage - the shot of Shelby riding the Ankylo Zord actually comes from the Kyoryuger episode where Kyoryu Gold debuts, four episodes after the one this episode is based on. Yet another sign of the care and attention that's being made with making this season that is SO welcome after the disaster of the last couple of years.

Personally... I hope the can do a 3 "blue" combination...
Blue ranger, Aqua Ranger and talon ranger zords combine... It will be impressive...

To be fair Pachycephalosaurus is a mouthful. It's a fair contraction.
